Melrose, MA—Managing money can be difficult for people of all ages, but the challenge increases as we grow older. Thanks in part to a $1,000 grant from Melrose Bank, Mystic Valley Elder Services’ (MVES) Money Management Program will continue to grow, helping area elders manage their bills and check registers.
“The ability to handle personal financial matters can become a burden for people as they age,” said MVES Executive Director Daniel J. O’Leary. “Melrose Bank’s support allows us to increase the number of elders we can help through the Money Management Program.”
James Oosterman, Vice President, Melrose Bank, comments, “As a board member of MVES I have come to understand the significant need for this type of service to seniors. There are many groups addressing the social and medical needs of seniors, but there’s not a lot of accessible and inexpensive financial management assistance available. The MVES Money Management Program is well-respected, it meets a very real need in our community, and Melrose Bank is pleased to support it.”
MVES will use the funds to provide operational assistance for the free Money Management Program. The program is reliant on volunteers, so the MVES Money Management program coordinator will continue his efforts to recruit new volunteers to serve older adults in need of money management support in the community of Melrose and the surrounding region.
The MVES Money Management Program is a practical, economic solution that helps low-income elders with budgeting, paying routine bills, and keeping track of financial matters. Trained and insured volunteers are matched with local elders and make monthly visits to assist with opening mail, writing checks for elders to sign, developing and managing a budget, and balancing checkbooks. The program helps elders meet their financial obligations and remain safe and independent in their own homes.
